Avalon Podiatry’s Bunion Solution Program is a revolutionary, one-of-a-kind system that will help you put an end to painful, unsightly Bunions once and for all. This program incorporates the most effective strategies to permanently change the look and feel of your feet.

What is a Bunion?

A bunion is caused when the big toe pushes against the next toe, forcing the big toe joint to enlarge and protrude. The skin on the bunion can be red and sore. Bunions can be caused or exacerbated by wearing tight, narrow shoes. Other causes include hereditary structural defects, unusual stress on the foot, and other medical conditions like arthritis.

Sometimes bunions are secondary to another deformity, like flat feet, and the primary deformity needs to be addressed first.

How to treat a Bunion problem?

Bunions can be treated conservatively.

If caught early and there is no persistent pain, switching to well-made, well-fitting shoes may be all that is required. In some cases, bunion pads, splints or other shoe inserts can also help. In other cases, custom orthotic shoes with specially designed insoles are necessary to relieve pressure and help the foot regain its proper shape.

Minimally-invasive approach to Bunions

If bunion symptoms are severe, surgical treatment may be recommended. Surgery for a bunion is called a bunionectomy. This surgery is done under general anesthesia or local anesthesia with sedation. Often times, the bone behind the big toe is realigned by cutting ligaments at the joint. For severe bunions, it is necessary to cut the bone in a technique called osteotomy. Excess bone is shaved off, and screws or wires may be used to keep the bones aligned.
Surgery should not be performed for strictly cosmetic reasons because the risks outweigh the potential benefits. Possible complications of surgery include: overcorrection, under-correction, recurrence of the bunion, persistent pain, and limited mobility of the big toe.
